Leap of Faith: Imminent

 What is an introduction?

I guess it depends on the situation.

It might be formal or casual. It might be cursory, exhaustive, or somewhere in between.

I guess a lot about this introduction depends on who you are, dear reader.

Do we already know each other? Did we just meet? Have we never met at all?

Considering all of these possibilities, I want to introduce myself in the most versatile way.

My name is Rebekah, and this is my school. *gestures grandly at surrounding empty space*

What did you come here to learn about?

About me? I am a teacher, among other things. I love to think about thinking and get learners involved with their learning.

In education, there is a saying, "Meet the student where they are."

This is why students who feel far behind, afraid to engage, or hopelessly confused are my favorites. I excitedly grab my map, a flashlight, some snacks, and a water bottle, just so I can set off to find them.

When they are located, I will sit with them and look around, taking stock of what their world is like.

I know that I can't teach somebody I don't understand.

I know that learners must want to learn, not be trained to perform tricks.

I celebrate growth, just keeping up, and most earnest efforts.

As a language teacher, I welcome any student production, because it keeps me from talking too much.

This is not my first blog, nor is it my first effort to educate abroad.

I've been learning Spanish for my entire adulthood, and have traveled to Colombia and Mexico often.

In 130 days, I will return to Mexico, to finish my master's degree in TESOL. (oh yeah, did I mention I'm a student?)

In approximately 220 days, I will move to Colombia, to offer classes in English.

Maybe I'll meet you. Maybe not.

Maybe I'll teach you. Maybe I'll learn from you. (probably both. No, yeah, definitely both)

Either way, this has been done: the chrysalis is ruptured and wings are unfurled. Life constantly changes anyway, why not change with it?

There's so much more to say, but that's not what introductions are for.

They are for leaning forward, with a smile, and beginning something new.
